UrbanArt will honorably host the solo exhibition of Tae-Hak Oh (Pen name : San-Dong)who has been one of the leading painters of our time in 2006 Korea International Art Fair.
San-Dong made his debut through the National Art Exhibition as a student attending Hongik-University. Since then, throughout his early 60's prize-winning works Dak-Jang(Henhouse), the Goon-Woo(Oxen in Groups), etc in the National Art Exhibitions, he ranked himself as the one of the recommended artist. San-Dong creates his work on overlaid multiple of Korean traditional papers, thickened for strength, and covering whole canvas with mineral pigments made of stones, then etching off to shape the form with brush or knife. Creatively renovating traditional folk art into extremely modern one, his sublimation can't be overstated as an epoch-opening in contemporary Korean art. His incessant probe and devotion into creating new trend is still in as high tide as 30 years ago. In his saying that ¡° I concern about nothing but a thing that will last over hundreds¡± we can glimpse his austere determination and passionate love in stone painting.
His work is characterized by such powerful images as the Korean hills and fields, the innocence of naked children, and the peaceful lives of farmers and fishermen at work.
After the disastrous hemorrhage that paralyze his right hand 4 years ago, he showed off his ultimate volition in the exhibition which held in Chosun Ilbo Art museum, 2003, which is completely prepared by only his left hand, overcoming pains of continuous dull of left hand in every 10 minute. ¡°The essence of Korean art lies in earth, as in frescos of Goguryu or Baekje or in Buddha images. Everything starts from earth and turns back to earth. I've been grown up and ripened from that soil, and pursued to complete it.¡± Like his saying, every landscape and characters in his work radiate bountifully the beauty of earth, smells of soil, and everything stand and live on that, reminding us all precious memory of hometown which has been lost in the concrete buildings and pavement of asphalt.
